What is a Barista?

A barista is a well-respected professional who is highly-skilled in coffee preparation and has a specialized knowledge in coffee blends, coffee varietals, espresso, espresso machines, and coffee roasting. Some baristas have honed their craft to the point where they are considered true artists.

How Much Do Baristas Make?

The average hourly pay for typical baristas is about $8.50 per hour, but will vary by experience and location. Experienced baristas who work in high volume coffee shops can earn up to $12 per hour. These wages may include tips.

How Do I Become a Barista?

In general, most employers do not require any educational qualifications to become a barista, although a high school diploma is usually preferred. You may be able to simply apply for a job at a local coffee shop, and all the barista training will be provided to you while you work. For those of you who may want to learn the ins-and-outs of espresso and coffee blends while getting some experience prior to working, or for those who are having difficulty getting your foot in the door, you may want to take a training course at one of the barista training schools in our Barista Training Course Directory.
